Since we haven’t done one of these in a while, it will probably take me a bit to catch up. I have been putting off doing these because we got some feedback that income reports didn’t really go with the theme of our site. However, given that enough people have asked for them, I finally decided to just ignore the naysayers :).
I am cherry-picking our starting point a little here since we had a sale this month (July) and I have wanted to do an income report ever since to talk about how it went and the service we used called Gumroad. The last income report I did was in March.
FYI, we are an affiliate for some of the below links. All these suggestions are based on our experience and extensive research.
Intro To Gumroad
I have to thanks the guys at Fizzle for talking about Gumroad. It is really an awesome tool. There is no monthly fee and it is easy to set up and create. If you are going to create your product, I highly recommended it. We decided to run a sale for the 4th of July on one of Lacey’s eCookbooks. We had learned from the guys at Fizzle that a sale with an end date was likely to increase the number of sales because people don’t put off the buying of something they are interested in. I wasn’t really sure what to expect but the last day of the sale had quite a few sales so definitely having an end date seemed to boost sales at the last minute.
Quick Note on Fizzle
If you’re interested in turning your food blog into a business or any blog or website for that matter, I highly recommend Fizzle. It is a great community with a ton of good tips and video courses. They have a free blog at the sparkline and a free podcast.
They go into a lot of really cool topics, like how to make videos, creating your first product, finding your audience, etc… Plus there is a course on food blogging that John and Dana over at Minimalist Baker put together. Its really good stuff and the first month is only $1 so it’s definitely worth giving Fizzle a shot.
Our YouTube channel, asweetpeachef, has been going really well. As of this post, we are approaching 400 subs and 20k views. I am really happy with that growth in the first 5 months. The growth so far has been better than my aggressive growth plan which is great. We have tried to do two videos a week – one longer Cooking Can Be Easy and one shorter, more how-to type. Although, recently, we have decided to focus on one a week and then do some smaller series-type videos. We have managed to create 40+ videos and our original goal was to get 50 or so done by the end of the year so we are on track for that which is really cool.
It’s crazy that, for the last income post we had, we just launched the channel and, now, it is already growing and has 40-something videos. Just couldn’t have imagined it doing so well so fast. I have to say I am really proud of the team we have here with Sean working on the video production and Lacey, of course, doing the recipes – great job!
Onto the traffic report for the month of July, 2014. You’ll notice that Google switched their terms on us from the last report. We saw growth in all areas, comparing March to July. About 5k extra across the board. Pretty happy with that. We saw more traffic from a lot of the major players (ie. Google, Pinterest and our email campaigns). However, less traffic from smaller referring sites. Still waiting for the elusive 100k unique month. 🙂
Top Traffic Sources
We had some interesting new pages get into our top 10 for July: Fresh Peach Jam and Homemade Dill Pickles. It was funny to see pickles show up years after we did that post but it was the month for canning and Pinterest seemed to push it. Same thing with peaches 🙂 Always cool to see traffic to posts from out of nowhere.

Our main source of income is now BlogHer instead of AdSense which is nice. We have seen a nice bump here in July (spoiler alert: it gets better). However, this month, we also had the eCookbook sale which added a nice amount. This was our best month in a while and we were profitable by a good amount which is always nice.
We are still looking to branch out by adding more affiliate sales and a few products in the sales funnel. In that same vein, we restarted our How To Start A Food Blog series and I have a new newsletter that focuses on this here.
