Okay, so it’s mid-August already! How did that happen so quickly?
Given how close we are to the end of summer, I thought I’d take some time today to look back over my Summer List and what I’ve been able to cross off accomplish so far. In case you missed that post, you can go ahead and check out My Summer List if you’d like.
Okay, here it goes:
TO DO
4th of July 10k race: Dustin and I finished the race, reluctantly, after arriving late and having to run 2 miles uphill just to get to the starting line because we had to park so far away. Man, did we ever want to give up, but we didn’t! Glad it’s over, but it was still nice to have continued the tradition.
grandpa’s b-day party: There was all kinds of craziness in the kitchen with my mom and her sisters *eh hem* helping *eh hem* me make the cakes. Almost a complete disaster, but turned out well in the end and my grandpa loved it. Good times.
spend a day at the harbor with Dustin and Jordan for my b-day: My birthday isn’t until September, so I am anxiously anticipating this one! Though, did you see my early birthday gift from Dustin??
u-pick with the fam: Would you believe San Diego has no u-pick farms?? I didn’t either until I searched online and could only find a few that weren’t really what I was looking for. Fail.
wine tasting in Temecula with friends: Well…looks like this will need to go on the back burner, as Dustin and I have decided to try for our second child (yep!). Wine tasting is pretty much out of the question for the foreseeable future.
Del Sur farmers market: Definitely taking advantage of the Farmers Market as much as possible this summer. We also just joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in our area that should be starting soon.
high school reunion: Checked this one off the list last week. Very good to see old friends and catch up. Weird how life goes on, huh?
family reunion in L.A.: We all met at a deli in Northridge called Brent’s and it was fabulous. It was so nice to see my dad’s side of the family — my cousins, aunt and uncle, etc. Unfortunately, Jordan was a little under the weather and the restaurant was too crowded for much conversation.
TO EAT AND DRINK
sangria: Well, not yet. Coming soon, though. Guess it will need to be an alcohol-free sangria too (see “wine tasting in Temecula with friends” summary). Hey, that can still be good! Really, I promise!
mint chip ice cream: Still waiting on the poll results. So excited to make this again. There are Andes Chocolate Mints in this ice cream, people, Andes Chocolate Mints. Mmmm.
fresh cherry pie: Yes, yes, yes! Totally delicious and possibly the best dessert I’ve ever made. LOVED it.
fish tacos: Looks like this will be the first on my list from the poll results. That is, unless you vote and change it. Sounds so yummy.
homemade mint lemonade: I was very satisfied with this recipe. Perfect for a hot summer day.
peach cobbler: Dustin is very sad the peach cobbler isn’t winning on the poll. I actually had to limit him to only the one vote. Coming soon, though, coming soon.
homemade coffee cake for breakfast (or dessert!): Not yet, but still sounds delicious!
homemade jam: Still trying to decide on a fruit for the jam. Unfortunately, most of the good jam-making fruits are already gone for the summer. If you have any ideas, please let me know!
crab cakes: Just waiting on that poll of mine. Any day now!
watermelon sorbet: One word: yummy! A must for the summer.
So, there you have it. Still lots of things I have yet to do, make and/or eat so far this summer. Though, I have to say that writing this list has really lit a fire under me to accomplish all my summer goals. Well, that and my obsessive need perfectionist personality that needs all my list items to be checked off.
I will be closing the poll shortly and posting the results next Saturday, so make sure you get your votes in soon!
Thanks for listening!
Enjoy!

I can attest to the deliciousness of the watermelon sorbet!
If you are looking for an easy jam recipe, there was a great article in the LA Times a few weeks ago about small-batch no-pectin jam making. http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-calcook-20100805,0,2809915.story
I made peach jam using this method yesterday and it turned out well. The jam is definitely on the thinner side, but tastes wonderful. Just peaches and sugar. I also made a batch with thyme as an accent flavor. What’s great about it is you make small batches, so you can experiment if you want.
Hey Lelah! Thanks for your jam suggestion! I really like the sound of an easy-to-make, simple peach jam recipe. I’ll definitely check out that article. I’m used to making jam in such large batches and with pectin so that sounds like a nice change of pace. Thanks again!
Hi Lacey
you had quite a summer, and seems like you accomplished a lot! I wish my list was that long!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Hey there, Chef Dennis! It’s funny…I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot this summer, too, but then I look at how many unfinished to-do’s are still on my list. It is what it is, right?
Thanks, I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer as well.
I can’t believe summer is almost over, either! So much to do and so little time.
I am still glad every day that you got to make that cherry pie though. Amazing.
I completely agree, Joanne. I completely agree.
Is it weird that the cherry pie was a highlight of my summer?
So glad you got so much accomplished this summer- (The cherry pie sounded delicious, btw!)I think I’ll need to make a list next summer, it worked so well for you! School is looming- I start next week and only got a small bit done of what I wanted to. I did get jam done yesterday though- if you have blackberries available, this jam was delicious!

Hi Betty! Yeah, I’d really recommend writing a list next summer — and posting it on your blog. It made me feel more accountable to get as much done as possible ‘cuz others were actually following it with me. Thanks for the jam link, though I haven’t seen blackberries out here for a while. *sigh*
Your photos are so lovely, and whatever you dish up looks so very delicious, I have a list of things I want to try!!!
Thank you so much, Miss Becky. You just totally made my day
