Guess what? Dustin, Jordan and I are on our way Austin, Texas!
We have been wanting to visit for the longest time and we are using the opportunity of a friend's wedding in Dallas to spend some extra time exploring Austin. While we are there, we plan to eat lots and lots of tasty food --specifically BBQ, but I have heard of a famous Airstream trailer that sells cupcakes which I find very intriguing. We also plan to check out the Capitol building, University of Texas and Lake Travis as well as maybe scout out some homes. Maybe. Heehee.
Dustin and I have often played around with the notion of moving to Austin. He grew up in Dallas and has always wanting to return to Texas while I grew up in Southern California, never left and am now ready for an adventure. So, we are very excited to check out Austin in all it's glory.
We will be here till October 7th, so feel free to share your favorite Austin places and we just might check them out. After that, we will be in Dallas for a few days. Oh, and did I mention this was a road trip? Woohoo!
One last thing...On a more personal note, Dustin and I are now expecting our second child!! Our due date is April 29, 2011. Yay!

Miss Becky, you are so sweet. Yes, Dustin and I are quite happy with our little bun in the oven -- minus the fatigue and sickness ๐

There are so many wonderful places to go in Austin! Hey Cupcake (the airstream trailer) is on Congress. Almost directly across from that is Guero's-- this is where I fell in LOVE with grilled fish tacos-- they are my FAVE! And South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery is so much fun! I like to go to Torchy's Tacos there & have never been disappointed (can you go wrong w/ a fried avocado taco???). Have fun in ATX-- Texas is a great place to be:)

Wow. Some great ideas! Thank you so much for your advice, Ashley. We had Hey Cupcake on the list already, but I will also want to check out some of your other suggestions!! Thanks again.

Awesome! Our daughter lives in Austin with her husband and 2 young children. She grew up in Houston (where The Complete Package and I still reside) but attended the University of Texas at Austin. She loved it so much, she stayed. We love to visit. Austin is a great town. The unofficial motto is "Keep Austin Weird" which I love. It's a very open, creative, laid back town. You HAVE to go to South Congress for those cupcakes from an airstream trailer you've heard about. The red velvet and carrot cake cupcakes are to DIE for. Pay the few cents extra and get the whipped cream shot piped into the middle of it (if you plan to consume them immediately). There are fantastic shops across the street you shouldn't miss. You can see more on my blog at: http://insidenanabreadshead.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/things-i-love-volume-3-austins-soco/
Don't miss Chuy's Mexican restaurant on Barton Springs Rd. (not far from South Congress). I recommend the Elvis Memorial Platter and the Texas Martini (a margarita in a martini shaker served with jalapeno stuffed olives) for the hubby. http://www.chuys.com
For BBQ we love The Salt Lick, about 30 mins south of Austin in Driftwood, Tx. They have a great outdoor courtyard under the live oak trees if you have to wait for a table at night. You can bring your own ice chest with cold beer, and they serve family style if you go with a group. It's finger licking good. If that's too far, we also love Iron Works BBQ at Red River and South First, by the Austin Convention Center. It's close to the capital, too, if you're planning to tour. If you're there on a Saturday, plan to visit the Farmer's Market off Mopac (Hwy 1) and 360. It's our favorite Austin farmer's market. You can see more at: http://www.bartoncreekfarmersmarket.org/
Hope that gives you some ideas to get your trip started out right! Have a safe trip. Pack for warm weather with a fleece jacket or sweater at night. I hope you enjoy Austin as much as we do! - Jeanne

Thank you so, so much for giving us all this advice. You are so awesome. We took your advice and tried out The Salt Lick, but it was the one in Round Rock, as that was much closer to our hotel. We got the all-you-can-eat meal and really enjoyed their sausage...yum! Thanks for the cupcake suggestion...that is totally on my list. Your weather description was spot on! Too bad I didn't bring a fleece jacket!
Thanks again! So far, we are LOVING it and don't want to go home. ๐
