Ingredient Notes
Blackberries
Blackberries are an excellent source of antioxidants. They give you a ton of benefits—they're good for gut health and have plant compounds that protect you against illness and disease. I love that blackberries are a little bit tart, too!
Raw Honey
Raw, unprocessed honey is the best! With minerals and vitamins, this sweetener is the real deal. Vegans, (or maple syrup lovers) use pure maple syrup instead of honey to give your jam a touch of sweetness. You canalso use monkfruit or stevia for less added sugar.
Chia Seeds
Another absolutely super-packed food, chia seeds add fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and so much more. Read my benefits of chia seeds post! The other way to make jam is to use pectin, like I do in my peach jam recipe, but chia seeds are magical seeds that will gel to make your jam.
How To Make Blackberry Chia Jam
One of the things I like most about this healthy jam recipe is its simplicity. You can't beat made from scratch jam, for taste and even color! This homemade Blackberry Chia Jam is a jam-lover's delight all around. It turns out wonderfully every time I make it, too. Best jam ever.
Step 1: Add the washed blackberries to a saucepan and heat on medium.
Step 2: Cook them until they begin to break down.
Step 3: Mash the berries.
Step 4: Remove from the heat and stir in the honey.
Step 5: Add in the chia seeds and let cool.
Step 6: Bottle your homemade Blackberry Chia Jam and enjoy it!
Substitutions
Flax Seeds
If you don't like chia seeds, you can substitute flax seeds, although for digestibility and making the chia more into a gel, it's best to use ground flax.
Raw Honey
Honey can be replaced equally with pure maple syrup in this healthy jam recipe.
Blackberry Chia Jam Goes Well With:
- Overnight Oats: Top your overnight oats with a dollop of Blackberry Chia Jam for a burst of tartness.
- Greek Yogurt: One of my personal favorites is to stir a little bit of healthy jam into my dish of plain Greek yogurt.
- PB&J: You've got to love a PB&J sandwich. Make homemade peanut butter. It's easy, too!
How To Store Blackberry Chia Jam
We typically eat homemade Blackberry Chia Jam pretty quickly in our house, but you can freeze it for up to 3 months.
Otherwise, store in the fridge for 2 weeks. Sadly, it cannot be canned, as the chia seeds don't take to canning well.

Ingredients
- 4 cups blackberries
- 1 tablespoon raw honey, as needed for sweetness (use pure maple syrup if vegan)
- ¼ cup chia seeds, plus more as needed, to thicken
Instructions
- Add the blackberries to a saucepan and set over medium heat.
- Cook until the blackberries break down and become liquidly, about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Mash the fruit with the back of a spatula or a potato masher. You can make it as smooth or as lumpy as you'd like here for the texture of the jam.
- Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the honey. Taste, and add more honey, as needed, for additional sweetness. If vegan, use pure maple syrup instead of raw honey.
- Add the chia seeds, and stir to combine.
- Let stand 5-10 minutes, or until thickened. The jam will continue to thicken, especially once refrigerated, but if you'd like a thicker consistency, particularly with very high-liquid fruits, you can stir in more chia seeds 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Once the jam has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to a jar or sealable mason jar.
