Easy Blueberry Compote

This post has been updated to include new images and a recipe video.

Blueberry Compote

Do you know how to pronounce the word, “Compote?”

Well…I didn’t for the longest time.  Like until just 5 minutes ago.   Sigh.

I knew how to cook a compote and what it was and that I liked it on my pancakes.  But actually pronouncing it?

Not so much.

At restaurants, I would kind of mumble or slur my words so as not to give away I didn’t know how to say it.

Sad, I know.

And I probably wasn’t even fooling anyone.  Ah well.

The thing is: I have a wonderful and easy peasy Blueberry Compote recipe I wanted to share but I felt I couldn’t post the recipe unless I knew how to pronounce the word accurately.

I know.  I know.  You would’ve never even known I couldn’t pronounce it if I hadn’t said anything.

But I had to come clean.  It had been too long!

I feel much better now, so thank you very much.

In fact, I even found a website that pronounces words for you.  So if you don’t know how to pronounce “compote” either, just click on over here.

No one will ever know…

Ingredients
  • 2 cups frozen blueberries divided
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 2 1/2 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2-1 tsp fresh lemon juice optional
Instructions
  1. Pour half the blueberries (1 cup) into a medium sauce pan and set aside the remaining 1 cup. Add the water, honey and cinnamon and cook over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  2. After 10 minutes, gently smash the blueberries against the pan using a wooden or plastic spatula. Add the remaining blueberries and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes to heat through.
  3. Add lemon juice, if desired, to taste. (This will make the blueberry flavor pop a little bit more but isn't necessary.)
  4. Serve warm.

I made this easy blueberry compote this morning for a yogurt-granola parfait, and I LOVE it!! I am so happy honey is used as a sweetener.

I was looking for an easy recipe and here we are! Made it and it was great! Thanks, Rose

I use your recipe with fresh blueberries. Once it’s cooled, I store the compote in a mason jar in the fridge. My family uses the compote on ice cream, yogurt, toast, sandwiches, etc. I imagine, this would be good in a vinaigrette as well. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I tried this the other day, and I used the compote to make a blueberry cobbler (my first cobbler ever). And my family loved it! It was so good!
Now I’m trying it with come canned peaches as well, and a little of the peach syrup. I also added a couple sprinkles of ground ginger.
    Here’s hoping!

  5. Sounds good! I am looking to swirl this into mini cheesecakes so I think I will cut out the honey so it isn’t too sweet and maybe less water? I don’t know I will make it as you have listed and work from there. I can’t wait to try this on waffles too! I just found this site from a google search. Seems like a great site. Oh and I’m certainly going to use that site from now on when I need to know how to say a word lol. Thanks 🙂

    1. Hi Adrienne! I’m so glad you found this site. Welcome 🙂

Your idea of swirling it into a mini cheesecake sounds amazing. Yes, I’d recommend reducing the liquid since you’ll want it to be a swirl. Best of luck!

    1. Hi Pam! Mix the 3 tbsp. water with 1 tbsp. cornstarch before adding to the compote and then cook until thickened. That should do the trick 🙂

  6. Did a quick search for blueberry compost this morning and found your website. Tried it out on pancakes and my family loved it! Thanks for a great, quick and delicious recipe!
