If you know me, you know I LOVE Mexican food. Something about all the different flavors, textures, colors, and spices has me consistently making healthy Mexican recipes.
Unfortunately, most American Mexican restaurants contain many unhealthy saturated fats, oils, sodium, and calories. But who's to say we can't make our own?

What Is The Lowest Calorie Mexican Food?
Grilled meat is an excellent option if you're looking for something low-calorie at a restaurant. Go for grilled protein tacos like chicken, beef, or steak โ and of course โ fish! It's also crucial that you choose healthy sides with your proteins like Mexican coleslaw, black beans, or veggies. And we can't forget about salsa!
Additionally, it's healthier to go with corn tortillas for fewer calories than refined flour tortillas.
Is Mexican Food Generally Healthy?
Generally, traditional Mexican food (and Americanized MX food) doesn't mesh with clean eating. More often than not, Mexican food is made with lots of sodium and saturated fat. Many dishes are also deep-fried and accompanied by loads of cheese and sour cream.
So usually, not the healthiest. Luckily, many restaurants and fast-food chains are catching up with what the people want... more nutritious food!
And of course, you can always make Mexican food at home, which is fun and even better! Read on further for my favorite homemade Mexican recipes you'll love.
What Is The Best Thing To Eat At Mexican Restaurant?
It's not impossible to eat healthy at a Mexican restaurant, but you have to be intentional and choose dishes based on cooking style and their nutritional benefits.
Here's a quick cheat sheet/ list of healthier options:
- Chicken fajitas
- Steak fajitas
- Grilled meat dishes (avoid deep-fried proteins)
- Burrito bowls
- Chicken tortilla soup
- Enchiladas (Remember to make sure theyโre wrapped in corn tortillas.)
- Soft-shell tacos (When in doubt, choose soft tacos. Because less frying = less oil.)
- Ceviche (low-carb and always a clean option)
- Brown rice
- Guacamole
And hereโs a list of things you might want to avoid or lessen when you order:
- Sour cream
- Items loaded with cheese
- Anything fried
What Is The Most Unhealthy Mexican Food?
On the other hand, here are some deep-fried and unhealthy foods I'd suggest you avoid or eat in moderation.
- Refried beans (lotsa lard and excess fat)
- Chimichanga (These are deep-fried burritos, soโฆa big no. If you love burritos, check out my clean make-ahead recipe here.)
- Queso (often loaded with fat and calories if traditional ingredients are used. Check out my healthy queso here.)
- Chile Relleno (These also have a ton of cheese in them and are deep-fried in oil.)
- Nachos (Usually deep-fried and covered with loads of cheese and lotsa sodium. Donโt worry, Iโve made a healthy sweet potato version here.)
- Tostadas
- Taquitos
- Deep-fried tortilla
Is Mexican Food Easy To Make?
Yes, Mexican food is usually straightforward to make, which is why itโs โ hands down โ one of my preferred cuisines. Not only is it easy, but its ingredients are accessible and affordable.
You can make an entrรฉe, appetizer, or side with a few staples in your pantry. For example, these beautiful Shredded Chicken Enchiladas are ready in just 40 minutes with super healthy ingredients and simple cooking techniques. So good.
What Mexican Food Can I Eat On A Diet?
If youโre on a diet, stick to low-calorie and clean options like grilled proteins. Make sure to accompany them with healthy sides such as ceviche, guacamole, black beans, sauteed veggies, tortilla soup, or an avocado salad.
